Case in Point
In 2006, the NYPD stopped, questioned and frisked 500,000 individuals. Nine out 10 people were neither arrested nor issued summonses, which means they were involved in no criminal wrongdoing. 86% of those stopped were Black or Latino. More than half of the listed reasons were “area has a high crime incidence.” (source)
Without Probable Cause
Presence in a high crime area cannot legally be the sole basis for a stop. Every two years, nearly 1 million people will essentially be harrassed by police in NYC alone, but they have absolutely no means to resist or respond. I Am Your Witness will respond, loud and clear.
Community as Witness
Friends and neighbors can use I Am Your Witness to chronicle these small abuses that build systemic injustice. Incident by incident, they can identify the officers and the practices that undermine the relationship between police and the community. Advocates and organizers can push for improved management and policy, with facts, figures, and direct testimony to make their case.
